I haven't purchased XP but the previous owner told me that laptop came with it. I've downloaded an Xp image installed with the serial from the sticker and activated on the net. But is it legal to use Windows on my machine?
Absolutely. Computers with Windows stickers and serial numbers are sold legally; in fact, the copies of Windows that come with them are supposed to follow these computers (i.e., you can't legally remove Windows from that computer, then install it on another).
