Watching data over a ethernet connection?

hey i was wondering could you like connect you computer between say the computer you are watching and the internet or the connection to it's isp. i have heard of stuff like this but how would you actually do that and even if you could how would you be able to read the information transferred over the network????????

You can use a protocol analyzer, or "packet sniffer". Wireshark is a great one and its free. You will have to have a little knowledge about protocols and tcp/ip to make good sense of it, but you could probably learn quite a bit by just getting it and experimenting also.

The thing is, it will only capture packets that are broadcasted, and most switches and routers these days prevent all packets from being broadcasted.

You will have to either spoof your mac address to the one you are spying on, or arp flood the switch you are both plugged into. .. In order for you to sniff all thier packets.

..unless you are on wireless, then its easier. you just put your wi-fi adapter into monitor mode and you collect everything thats flying through the air... but thats another story.
