Sounds like you were receiving a signal from an un-secured port. No login or password required. Now they have secured the port. Hope this explains it.

Is it possible to locate a PC (within a local network) based on MAC address?
Suppose there's a wi-fi router placed centrally in a park. Anyone can come to the park with their wi-fi enabled devices and use the connection. Everyone in the park will be given Class C IP address. Now, in the admin module of the wi-fi the administrator is able to see, the machine name, the MAC address and the assigned IP address to all the connected devices. Is it possible for the admin to physically locate a particular machine, say, someone who's misusing the connection, and thrash him/her? I know its possible to disconnect/ban him if need be, but can he be really 'located'?
It depends on how hard the administrator wants to work and how many people on connected at the time.
The chances of getting caught the first time will be pretty slim. But by the 5th time, process of elimination will most likely get you ID'd
After that, banning the machine by using the MAC ID is trivial.

DOES WI-FI WORK ON AIRPLANES?
im going to america its like 11 hr flight do they have WI-FI for my laptop
I doubt it, you'll probably have to do something else, besides internet on your LapTop. Sorry.
WiFi is a short range signal (HotSpot or Wireless Access), you must be within range of Someones Router or Network. In rare cases someone might use a Cantenna to shoot out a HotZone.
The staff on the AirPlane may or may not allow you to use Wireless Devices, whether it be (Service Providers or WiFi). But, at the Airport you certainly could. Even if your allowed, I doubt that there would be WiFi Access in the Plane, as for Service Providers, the answer would be Yes, that's again only if your allowed to. Although being above clouds you probably would have a harder time getting service.
I've never been on a plane, but its just a thought.
Nope. No airplanes currently have wi-fi service though some airlines are thinking about offering it. It's also not allowed to turn on your computer's wi-fi while the plane is in flight (although if you did do it, your computer would not pick up anything except possible other computer users who also shouldn't be using their wi-fi).
WiFI has to be turned off whilst in flight, because it interferes with the Instruments.
there is no internet coverage on a aeroplane. Wifi is a short range signal. there is no Wifi on or in a plane.
If you have a certain provider yes. But you are not allowed to use anything that sends or receives a signal so it doesn't matter anyways.
No. Airlines do not provide Internet service. You'll have to wait until you're in the airport. And they charge you for it!
Your wifi should be turned off on a plane!!!
the plane can crash if people turn on wifi you can goto prison if caught!!!
unless you have permission!!!

What does this mean when I try to diagnose the problem?
Today my computer is going crazy. The internet connection is going off and on randomly and I've been trying to reset the local area connection adapter to fix the problem but nothing works. It says that I'm connected to 'Local only' and I have no idea what to do. Anyway, to get to the point, when I tried diagnosing the problem, this pop-up appeared: http://i422.photobucket.com/albums/pp303...
The webpage that I was led to is this one: http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.a...
What do I do? Please answer. >_<
reset your modem
That Microsoft Web page is useless. The pop-up isn't much better. You do already have an ISP, don't you?
Have you tried calling its tech support line? You may have a modem that's going bad, or a problem with the ISP's connection.
Good luck.

How do you delete an ad hoc network?
I connected to an ad hoc network about a month ago in an airport when trying to connect to my FaceBook. It didn't work but I noticed that afterwards I could still see the network in my "Connect to a Network" thing. How do I remove the notification of the ad hoc network.
I run Windows Vista on a laptop.
If you created the ad hoc connection it will still be there in case you want to connect to it again. If you connected to it, it shouldn't still display but it may just be that it's a stored connection. In any case go to "manage wireless networks" in the network and sharing center and just delete it. It should stop showing then.

What is IP address......?
Is it the password to your wireless internet or something else??...
Think of an IP address as your computer's civic address on the Internet. An IP address can be broken up into a "network address" and a "host address", or to follow the analogy, your computer's "street" and "street number". When you send information on the Internet, your computer addresses it to the IP address of the destination computer, and includes your source IP address for a sort of "return to sender" mechanic. It's very, very much like your local postal service for normal mail.
IP address is a way to correctly identify certain PC's over the internet network. Every PC has to have a unique IP address. It is done in Binary form, then transmitted into Decimal.
An IP address is the numerical network address all computers need to talk to each other, a bit like a phone number/extension for telephones.
ip addy is the number assigned to your computer so it can be recognized
on the network or the internet
each are unique to every pc

Which one is the most used linux distribution for web hosting and network administration?
Depends on what kind of web hosting. If a large commercial enterprise, stick with the mainstream, commercially supported versions.
For home use, I use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, as it is supported with patches for 3 years.
This site has many howtos, to set up almost any Linux as a server. I used the Ubuntu version (linked):
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server...
For network (web server) admin, I use ISPConfig
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server...
I've seen CentOS (which is a clone of Red Hat) used a lot.
Most of the companies I consult for use RHEL or a derivative of RHEL, then again most companies hire me because of my RHEL/CentOS background so the results are biased.
I'd like to suggest FreeBSD (google it)
Yahoo uses it and hotmail used it before it was purchased by microsoft.
(note: this is not a linux distro, but I highly recommend it.)

What is the best ISP.?
I want to know what the best ISP is for someone who is an average user and the money is a little bit tight. Comcast is too expensive. Is AT&T any good?
AT&T is good. The bottom of the line broadband is only $20 a month and is upto 768/384 speeds. Unless you are doing massive amounts of downloading or into watching streaming videos 768 down is just fine.
I've been with PacBell-SBC-ATT continously since 1995.
the best provider is relative to your area and to your needs. If you have phone service and cable TV, see if your providers offer a bundle, where you can get a discount for phone, internet and cable TV. If your needs can be met with dial up then your cost would be lower.

Vent problem.................?
So i can hear people on my vetn, but when i try to click my push to talk it wont even make the sound and my little icon wont light up...and i dont know much about vent...Helps!
Ensure your push-to-talk hotkey is set correctly.
Click "setup" then make sure the "use push-to-talk hotkey" box is checked and then below that you should see a field for "hotkey". Click in that box and push the key you would like to use as your hotkey. Then click OK and try it.

Does virtualization threaten CISCO
As virtual networks become more and more common, does a server centric network become obsolete?
IMO, I don't think so. The more and more you virtualize, you're really going to need a more robust and powerful switch with a powerful core running it. I believe though that you will see Cisco beef up their virtual switching products. I think it will begin to help them as well. Also, with their recent announcement of beginning to make unified computing platforms, which is a fancy way of saying "servers designed and built for virtualization", I believe you'll be able to get better hardware from them than you can Dell, and HP for virtualization. IMO I believe they'll begin to sweep up the competition for virtualization, except for IBM

Q. what all are different between Frame relay, Lease Line & ADSL connection?
Can you pls explain my query in dept.
Welcoming your valuable commands.
Many thanks.
The DSL will be cheaper, but has no guarantees. (Cost over service)
The LL will have a quality of service agreement. (Service over cost)
Any info beyon that has too many varibles, starting on what you want the service for. Talk to your phone company business rep.

Majorly confuzzled: Wireless routers and ADSL modems.?
Ok so I currently have an ADSL wired connection at home with a modem.
Im getting a wireless networking adapter for the xbox 360 for my birthday and i was wondering:
Can you connect a wireless ROUTER to an ADSL modem, and then have wireless connectivity with your computer and other devices?
Piece of Piroshki.
You have DSL -- Modem -- Computer.
You want DSL -- Modem -- Wireless Router -- Computer.
Simple matter of buying the router and connecting between the computer and modem. Computer is reset, if needed, for DHCP. Modem is configured for your ISP, if you have a username/password log-on you put that into the router.
Turn on the WiFI, turn on security for the WiFi, give your xbox your 10-digit WiFi key and you're in.
In simple terms, the internet comes into your modem then either:
-directly to your computer
-or to a router/hub
Most routers today are capable of wireless, and can connect many devices. If your router is close enough [to your 360], then you can just use ethernet.

Net install Ubuntu from XP commandline?
I'm in Windows XP commandline (terminal) and I'm the administrator. The computer is connected to internet.
How do I issue just a handful of commands (must all in commandline. No clicking here and there business) to start download all necessary files and start installing Ubuntu with the intent to have Ubuntu take over the PC from here on?
Thanks.
You need some external media, like a bootable USB stick or CD. Otherwise, as it starts to install, it has to blow away the hard drive to make Linux partitions, and you would lose your install files. The install would fail at that point.
A Live CD is the easiest way to do it.

Nitendo wifi connection?
i cant get it to work >_< i found my server when you search for one and put everthing in but when i search for my connection it fails help
Your connection is probably very low. That way the wii can't obtain the connection perfectly. Try to move closer to the connection and if you can't, buy a nintendo wifi connector.

How to make my Wireless Router Go Farther?
I have a comcast netgear wireless router. I need the network to reach farther across my house. What can I do? I do not want to get a new router.
Well you can get a range booster antenna or just sell yours and buy a wireless N router. Both can be found for cheap at this site:
http://discountwirelessrouter.com/
I%26#039;m not 100% but I%26#039;m quite sure you can%26#039;t extend it because when you buy it there is a certain range it can reach. Mine covers the house, Garden and some of my neighbors house because I got a medium ranged one. I would try selling it then buying a better one.

What can I do to speed up my computer online?
I don't like pop-ups.
There are a couple ways to improve online performance of computer. I can list the ones i know. Firefox is a no hassle browser with very little vulnerabilities. It doesn't allow pop ups unless you allow them and is more secure that IE. It has the same flavor as IE as well. As for getting pages to open faster ether faster net will be needed for you can get your computer to run faster. For example if you have a slow computer the net will naturally be slow since it is the computer that loads the pages. it wont matter if you have the fastest internet on earth if you using an old computer. so general cleaning and maintenance, even and upgrade can improve internet and computers overall performance.

My comp stays at greeting?
i have widows xp and i had something called comodo installed my friends had it for a while and was good on her pc... and its a disk/registry cleaner... it asked to restart when done ... so did
now it wont get passed the windows xp and wont let me sign in....
plz some 1 help :(
chris
This is networking section bro, but ill try to help
Have you tried safe mode? keep tressing F8 when your pc is booting. Get into your account and either uninstall comodo or roll back your pc to a previous day or week.
if not, get xp boot cd off somewhere (you know what I mean), go to repair and type FIXMBR, CHKDSK /p, and FIXBOOT (after each finishes).
Should get you back on track in no time.

When do I need to use a crossover cable in a network setup?
when networking 2 pcs directly together
it is NOT between a modem and router. it is a direct link between two computers. (e.g. not through a router)
whenever you go directly from device to device without a router

I pick up this unsecured wireless connection (public network) what does that mean?
These 'hotspots' may or may not be intended for public use, but as they are open, anyone can use them.
They can also be 'honeypots' where intentional low security settings lure parties into connecting; then attempt airwave capture methods to collect data streams. The ultimate goal may be sinister in nature.
'Hotspots'
can be trouble if you don't use extra precautions.
Because 'open' networks have no encryption between your unit and the router, everything you send or receive is in plain text. Meaning that a hacker, with a commonly available application, can intercept and log all of your traffic 'packets'; and with commonly available software, can run "brute force" programs that crack passwords.
So the best advice is: do not visit sites that are private, or require 'log-in', or credit cards, banks, etc.
The only secure method to use, over a 'hotspot' is a VPN, or SSL website.
Constrain your lappers random interface with these so you can make a logical choice about connections, securtiy, and so on:
Laptop settings:
If you're using Windows to configure your Wifi, go to Control Panel> Wireless Network Connections> Wireless Networks tab; here you'll need to identify all wifi networks your system 'sees', then for your own (or preferred) network, highlight it, then 'move up' to the top of the list: then, go to 'Advanced' button, tick 'access points only' and uncheck 'Automatically connect to non-preferred networks'>close> OK
Don't use these. In my experience they never really work, and they could be someone who set up a fake access point to steal your passwords and such.
If you do want to try anyway, first install a proxy server to protect your computer, for example for Windows, there is a free program called Hotspot Shield.
Just be aware that anyone can use this connection - it is not
password protected and your transmissions can be received
by others . If you can use a secure connection you are safer
from receiving unwanted viruses or trojans.
it means theres a connection around you with no password!
i recommend you take advantage of this! lol

What is difference between data communication and networking?
1 answer might be...
Data communication is the transfer of data between one computer system and another. Networking would be the method for getting that information transferred between the two systems.

Watching data over a ethernet connection?
hey i was wondering could you like connect you computer between say the computer you are watching and the internet or the connection to it's isp. i have heard of stuff like this but how would you actually do that and even if you could how would you be able to read the information transferred over the network????????
You can use a protocol analyzer, or "packet sniffer". Wireshark is a great one and its free. You will have to have a little knowledge about protocols and tcp/ip to make good sense of it, but you could probably learn quite a bit by just getting it and experimenting also.
The thing is, it will only capture packets that are broadcasted, and most switches and routers these days prevent all packets from being broadcasted.
You will have to either spoof your mac address to the one you are spying on, or arp flood the switch you are both plugged into. .. In order for you to sniff all thier packets.
..unless you are on wireless, then its easier. you just put your wi-fi adapter into monitor mode and you collect everything thats flying through the air... but thats another story.

Cant connect to nintendo wi-fi connection Help!?
Okay here is all the details
1. I installed the software on to pc which is connected wirelessly to the internet.
2. On the ds I went to the connection setup thing and hit connect to Nintendo usb wi-fi connector then I put the connector in the usb port and tried to connect
3. It said to grant access to my pc so I did.
4. It told me it is going to test it and I hit OK
5. It began to connect with a full signal bar and then stopped and said Error code: 52003 Unable to obtain IP adress. Confirm that the Nintendo WI-FI USB Connector is functioning properly. For help, visit support.nintendo.com
But the WI fi connector is working because it began to connect and stopped working and there is a flashing green light on the connector so please help and ask if you need more details and I'll add additional details and then edit your answer
Thank you and Bye
For help, visit support.nintendo.com
Probably better idea to check there first... mebbe your drivers aren't up to date?

My downstairs tenant is using my wireless connection (he knows my ssid and password), can he hack my network?
My downstairs tenant knows my ssid (wireless network name) and password, is there any way he can somehow get into my network and see what i'm doing? if so, how tecy savvy does one need to be to do this? and how would he go about this? If it's possible, i'm just going to tell him that my internet connection is slow, due to too much bandwith being used and i'll just change my wireless name and password. PLEASE HELP?
unfortunately, my brother gave it to him because he needs the internet
if i change it hes gona be like why did you change it i need it ...besides hes gona say hes paying and blah blah
It is possible for him to load spyware and keyloggers on your computers, but he would have to know how and your machines would have to be vulnerable.
Since you apparently know how to change the SSID and encryption key, I'll suggest you also do the following:
1. Stop the SSID broadcast. Just changing its name isn't enough: He's likely to try the new name.
2. Make sure Wireless Router Administration is turned OFF. This won't affect wireless Internet in the least, but it can keep your router from being hijacked out from under you.
And if he says he's paying, ask him where in the lease it says he can use your network?
Hope that helps.
Well, first of all.. if hes pretty tec savvy, he could sniff your wireless traffic whether he was on your wireless access point or not..using a sniffer.
and if he is connected to your access, he could potentially see and take what you have in your "shared folders".
you could change your accesss point password. which would prevent hi from accessing the files on your pc
Yes, he can possibly see the data you send and receiver from your computer.
How can he do this? With something called a "sniffer" tool. If he is smart enough to do it (most people are not), then he could download some software and compile the data to see what you are doing.
Well if he's paying what's the problem? he will only be able to watch your porn if you agree to file sharing.
If he is able to get into your network connection, then yes, there are freely available tools (one called Cain and Abel at www.oxid.it) that can be used to sniff passwords that you enter on websites and other data that you enter, without you even knowing. It does require knowing some terms and being a bit familiar with computers, but there are many tutorials on the internet for that one program alone. C&A is capable of gathering lots of info.
Also, if you are using WEP encryption on your router, you can easily be hacked by anyone in a matter of minutes since it is very weak. Use WPA protection if your router supports it.

Wat r some proxy sites to get by school blocks.?
Myspace must work on it
webroxy.com or coolenter.info
You can't. Schools routinely block MySpace and other risky and time-waster sites. You'll get a few responses telling you to use a proxy, but most systems block proxies by default. The better blocking and access control systems block proxies by inspecting the traffic looking for proxified traffic so it doesn't matter how "new" the proxy is, it will not work. On top of that, we admins subscribe to the same mailing lists and use scripts to scrub for new proxies and add them to the explicit block lists. By the time you hear about a "new" proxy, I've already had it blocked.
Be extremely careful of unknown "free" proxies. May of them are located in China, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Their real intent is to capture your logon credentials to the sites that you visit, not some altruistic desire to help you access blocked content for "free speech" purposes. They will then use that against you for all sorts of ugliness.
Several of the so-called proxies that have been posted here are actually malware infested sites designed to hijack your machine (and maybe your school's entire network!) into a bot-net to be used to spread SPAM, malware and/or viruses.

Soo I going to college? Im going to be taking computer networking and technical support annd..?
from everyone I talked to that take the program they say that the programs all full of guys the class is ALL guys and in some cases there are 3 or 4 girls in other classes taking different programs?Should I still go through with it? I mean its not a passion of mine?I just want to go to school to get a decent job then when the time Is right go to uni to become a nurse (which that my passion) I just don fully trust myself with going to univ YET. This is soo depressing 2 years in a room filled with guys omg? I mean would you look at a girl differently if you and her were in a program dominated by men (considering youe a guy)
I went to college for this and yes it is dominated by guys. However there were a few girls. There were no differences in how we treated each other or how we looked at each other. In fact, it was kind of nice to have a girl or two in your classes. Mixed things up a little. You'll be fine, but I don't see why you don't just go straight to Nursing if that is what you really want to do....
There is nothing wrong with women going into the IT field. It does tend to be dominated by men though. You are going to have to get used to being around all the guys more then they are around you. Expect a LOT of attention, maybe even more than you want.

Switching broadband HELP!!!!?
I currently have BT broadband, and I've noticed a '12 month contract'. does this mean i cannot change my provider?
You have a 12 month contract with BT....you're stuck with them , if you want out you'll be charged a penalty, possibly the remainder of your contract fee?
REMEMBER if you want to change your ISP, get in touch with them b4 your 12 months are up and ask for your MAC code number, as you'll need that to go elsewhere.
If you dont get in touch with them then, they may sign you up for another 12 months
If you tell them you're thinking of changing , they may offer you a discount to stay with them???
You can use any provider you want, but you are still obligated to pay for the service, because you have a 12 month commitment.
you stuck with them as its a legal contracy only way out is to buy yourself out

Problems with Windows XP and Netgear WPN311 accquiring IP address.?
I installed Netgear RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter WPN 311 on my mothers computer in February. It has been running and working great up until 3 days ago. Windows is not able to find and hold an IP address. Netgear is all set up, but constantly scans because windows can not acquire an IP address. At first it says it was behind a firewall....disabled those...now just trying to acquire.
Maybe try setting a static IP on your Netgear Router. If that doesn't work try setting a static IP using the network settings of your computer.
Check router settings and DHCP is configured to hand out an IP address and check the ranges if you have too many things connecting to the network they all require an individual IP address.

I heard about pirate bay is it safe?
i was going to download gta4 for my computer but i was wondering if it would be safe or would it be bad quality,as in could it have viruses............................. also does anyone no how to download things off pirate bay for my xbox 360?????
it is true that things from pirate bay are not always clean and of good quality. So you need to take some kinds of risks to test the product and dont run anything from them without scanning them with an updated anti virus. Also at times, the comments of the previous users come very handy.
If you are going to download check the comments below the torrent they will tell you if the game is ok to download and always scan them yourself after downloading.
To get games for your xbox just click piratebay>games >xbox.
Just one other thing with you will have to learn how to crack or patch or mount your file as most games need this done. It is very easy to do but if you have never done it make sure your torrent has full instalation instructions
go onto www.torrentz.com and search for what you want through there and you will have a few options of where to download them from and also people often leave comments about the quality of them. I HOWEVER!!! highly recommend not using pirate bay as they are cracking down on the people using it so for your sake I would avoid using it as I have.
these places are safe but what you download might not that is why you have to be very carefull & run your virus checker over your download before you open.
Whatever you download from these torrent sites, make sure you scan before opening.
The clue's in the name - stay way from pirates!

What is a torrent file?
jus want to no wat a torrent file is
torrent file is something like a ticket to download a bigger file. Its generally of very small size worthy of 10-30 KB. You need to download the torrent file of the file that you wanna download through torrent sharing networks. Then you run that torrent file with different p2p software like mu torrent or bit comet or Limewire etc. These softwires will bring down the large file for which you have downloaded the torrent file.
a torrent is like a social site that transfers files from peer 2 peer.
torrent sites a normaly illegal
it is illegal stuff which you can only download through utorrent

I need help on how to connect a 2nd computer to the internet.?
HI.. well like i said i need some help please.
my first computer is a desktop with windows vista and it has internet via cable modem (comcast). The second computer which is my brothers is in another part of the house and it is also a desktop with windows vista, lets say 80 feet apart from mine. He has a belkin wireless adapter which it was used for our ex internet provider (atnt).(if this is helpful)
ok...now ...can he's computer get internet access from mine? if this is possible please explain me how, with out any cables attach please . ill appreciate your help.
i think you should get a wireless router. i dont think its possible to receive from your other computer. If your computer that has no internet has an inside wireless adapter you dont need to buy an adapter, you just buy the router to transmit the signal.

Question about internet ten points best answer!?
On my modem there are lights that flash whenever data is being sent or received, basically whenever somebody is on the internet. Sometimes they flash when im not on the internet though, i have a multi security function set up on my wireless router (TKIP and AES) and nobody will have guessed the passcode, but i do have a wii console that is constantly connected to the internet (wii connect 24), so how come the lights that show internet activity flash sometimes when im not on the internet, because normally the wii only connects to the internet to receive message but even after the lights flash there are no messages on the wii, can anybody help with this?
These lights are normal, as any two directly connected devices will talk to each other, whether they're passing user traffic or not.
A big culprit is ARP traffic, or "Address Resolution Protocol". Your computer and router both maintain small databases linking MAC (media access control) addresses to IP addresses, and those records expire after a set amount of time, so the two devices keep each other updated.
To see this yourself, use a protocol analyzer such as wireshark (www.wireshark.org/) to see all the bits of traffic going from your computer to the router in real time. They're mostly just making small talk. :) The router and the modem are essentially doing the same thing.
they would be flashing because your wii would be checking the internet for updates/messages even though there are none there

Can you use your wireless router on your wii (for internet) without a computer?(desktop)?
Ok my computer broke and i wont be able to use wii shop channel, online gaming, etc. can i use my wireless router on my wii without the computer? or do i need my desktop to do this? and do i need a wifi adapter?PLEASE HELP!!X(((
If you have a wireless router the wii can still hook up to it. You may have to go into the options, and change the IP address though. I'm not sure... The most common IP that will work is 192.168.1.100 And you can change the 100 to 101 if it doesn't work. If there are other computers on the wireless network the wii will kick them off. I used to have a lot of fun with that feature!
If you have a wireless router the wii can be used with out a pc but if you do not have a wireless router then yes you need a computer for the wii channels to work.
You need the computer to be running with the router to transmit a wireless signal to the console.

If you have your DSL Modem connected to the PC
a. Get a wireless router and connect it to the modem and then the pc to the wireless router.
b. Get a WIRELESS network card and do an Internet Connection Sharing on the PC.
first make sure you wi fi is on, second make sure you sending a wireless signal, finally make sure you are setup for internet sharing in the Network and sharing center in Vista or the network setup wizard in xp and below.

How do i know if i have Wi-Fi?
I know i have a wireless connection but Wi-Fi isnt working plz help
Go to your router configuration (192.168.1.1) and check the wireless settings. It's going to tell you what kind of wireless connection it's using.
Alternatively you could look for the model number on your router and check it on google. I'm sure you'd find a link to a manufacturers website with a list of specifications.
Actually the router might even say on the back of it.
A wireless connection, but not sure about WiFi, so I'm assuming you're talking about a mobile phone? If that's correct, google the phone to see if it supports WiFi, and how it is used. Any more of an answer would require a more descriptive question, however.

Can the linksys router I already have be used on a new computer I just bought?
Ive had a linksys router for a few years on my old computer which died out. I got a new computer and want to know if I can use the router I already have or do I need to buy a new one? I have someone who can put it on for me tomorrow but was hoping to avoid buying a brand new one.
Thanks :)
Your old router will definitely work on your new computer. If you had it hooked through a wire ( Cat5 cable ) then just put the cable into your new computer and make sure the LAN ( Local Area Network is enabled ) If you were connected through a wireless connection then just connect to the wireless network just as B4.
It should work fine. It is most likely a G router.
Most new computers have support for both N and G so you should be fine.
Thanks :)

1 - Why do we need protocols in computer networks? Discuss in your own words.
What will happen if we do not follow traffic rules on the highway?
Obviously a major disaster.
2 - In internet IP Version 4 is going to be replaced by IP Version 6, discuss the major factor behind this change.
We are running out of IPV4 IP addresses. IPV6 or IP Gen will be next generation IP to meet explosive demand of IP's
IPv6 has a much larger address space than IPv4. This results from the use of a 128-bit address, where IPv4 uses only 32 bits. The new address space thus supports 2128 (about 3.41038) addresses

How do I set up my belkin wireless router as an access point to the internet?
I just bought a Belkin wireless G router and I am trying to connect the router as an access point to my laptop. How can I do this?
Welcome to the world of Wireless Networks or WLAN's
I highly recommend you read the instructions that came with the router as they should have detailed steps on how to set-up a a wireless network and connect devices to it.
That said you probably want the answer in a simple point form steps.
1) Get your the main data source and plug it into the correct slot of the Wireless router
2) Connect your Wi-fi capable laptop to the router via (if you are using Windows XP) 'Connect to' -> 'Wireless Network Connection' program
If everything goes smoothly, your new wireless router should be detected by your Laptop and if you are lucky you can select the network and will then have internet access on the laptop, wirelessly!
3) If it is not detected, gain access into the router via typing its IP address into a web browser. If this works you should be able to modify your routers settings. (Good luck with understanding all the various settings - I advise google searching if you get stuck)
If you cannot access the router wirelessly, get an ethernet cable and connect your laptop to the router via the ethernet cable and then try entering in the routers IP address into your browser. After which, you will be experimenting/tweaking your routers settings until your laptop detects the network and you get online.
Does this sound complex?
That is why its best to read the original, manufacturers instructions AND take a little initiative by researching WLAN's.
There are many resources out there via GOOGLE.
That said, new routers are usually very user friendly and there should be an 'easy mode' that you can follow to get online effortlessly.
Best of luck with your wireless network!
Do not forget to add security to your network (network keys, WEP or better encryption, MAC address only filters) to prevent people from easily accessing your wireless network.
If you have time, reply and tell us how it went!

How do i reboot my computer?
i want to delete everything on my computer.. its a gateway and i have windows vista. i don't have any reboot c.d's or anything butt i need like a code to type in to reboot or erase memory or something anything.. except using c.d's
restart your computer as soon as the sceen comes up type f8 over and over and over again till the screen shows safe mode and reboot
From what you're saying, it sounds like you're trying to reformat your computer rather than "rebooting" - which is just a synonym for "restarting" the computer. There is no "code" or command to do this as it requires several steps. Reformatting deletes everything on your current hard drive. You can do this part without a cd, but in order for the computer to regain day to day functionality, you will need to install an operating system - which usually are contained on a cd. I suggest that you take it to a pc shop if you really want this done. Or I can help you if you live in the Baltimore/Washington area.
u cant format any hard drive on which u hav the current OS,coz the OS is using the system files residing in tht drive,u gotta format it externally,I suppose u hav a floppy
maybe then u can make a startup disk or sumthing and format the disks
u can use the 'format' command to do so
or u can do onething, just unplug the hard drive and dump it sumwhere
tht shud help
good luck :)

Add/Remove text box in Vista?
How do I open the add/remove task box to remove programs. I am running vista and cannot find a feature to remove only to add.
It should say "Programs" and right underneath it is "Uninstall a program".
It is under the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. If it isn't there, I would google the registry key for it, and add it to your registry editor.

I bought a second hand laptop with a Windows Xp sticker and serial on it, it
I haven't purchased XP but the previous owner told me that laptop came with it. I've downloaded an Xp image installed with the serial from the sticker and activated on the net. But is it legal to use Windows on my machine?
Absolutely. Computers with Windows stickers and serial numbers are sold legally; in fact, the copies of Windows that come with them are supposed to follow these computers (i.e., you can't legally remove Windows from that computer, then install it on another).

Would it be a good investment to buy a computer with more than 2 cores?
you mean dual core vs quad core? i would choose dual core. at this point in time, quad cores arent completely stable and dual cores are much more cost-effective. while benchmarking tests show that quad cores give a slight boost to computer performance, those are only benchmarker tests. fact of the matter is, most computer applications arent written in regards to quad core. i used to have a dual core but made a new computer with a quad core and i ahve to say, the quadcore isnt anything earthshattering. save your money, go dual core.
Computers are not good investments in general. They never retain any solid resale value.
But if you are asking is it a good idea to get a quad core over a dual core, that all depends on what you intend to use it for.
Details are important, if you want a good answer you need to have good details.
What is your primary usage? Secondary?
Do you game?
Are you using it for work or school? If so, what major or field?
That's completely relative to your financial circumstances, your current system, and what you plan on using the system for. No one can answer this question for you but you.
If you really want to get into gaming, a dual core would be good but a quad core would be better. Even though I don't need all of it, 1 of my 2 computers has 4 quad core processors.
It depends on how much you have to spend, but I would recommend at least a dual core in a new computer.

Why does my internet go soooo slow some days but other days it doesn
Sometimes the internet even shuts off and I have to wait like 5 minutes before I can try going back on it again, and it's really getting irritating. Like today, this morning my internet was fine, normal and everything and now it's going soooooo slow. This doesn't happen everyday though, only once in a while, and the last couple weeks it's been shutting off a lot. Why does it do this? Thanks.
BTW, I have Comcast High Speed.
Your comcast connection is shared with everyone on your branch, your neighbors and nearby businesses. So bandwidth can be eaten up pretty quickly if there's a lot of activity on your branch. I would call them every time it happens until they supply more bandwidth to your branch.
This is unlike FIOS where my connection to the Point of presents (POP) is dedicated and everyone on my block that has FIOS has their own connection.
With cable internet, you don't have your own dedicated line.
You share the same cable line with other people on the street or neighborhood.
So when there are a lot of people online, like at night when everyone is home, everyone has to share the same cable line so you have less bandwidth, so that's why it will slow down.
Do you set you computer on a pillow or bed or anything like that!? The battery heats up when put it on something like a pillow.I tried using the computer on my bed in my room and it was going SLOW! my mom told me the reason and now my computer acts normal! Another reason could be you have to much memory in your computer. Try deleting stuff you dont use but dont delete something your not sure about.
~~Hope this Helps~~
The internet connection speed is shared between various users.
Sometimes you get 1:3 speed or sometimes 1:2. (depends upon the broadband provider)
All depends on your provider. If there having problems you'll be having problems.

Does AVG antivirus run a scheduled scan even with pc turnd off?
Nothing runs when the PC is powered off. If you use sleep mode, you should be able to set up a run that will wake up the PC when it's time, but that won't work if the PC is in hibernate mode or completely shut down.
Hope that helps.
No it does not. The only time it scans without windows loaded is when you turn it on. sometimes it scans while in power up(when it shows a black screen with writing and such-BIOS).
No actions can be taken while a PC is off.
no

I want a better power supply for my computer. is there such thing as an external one?
my computer is a Gateway GM5632e. it comes with 400-watt power, and i need 425W to run this new graphics card i want. and i saw the prices of the power supplies, and they were expensive, is there a way i can just add more power to my computer?
and external power supply would be nice too
I have never heard of an external solution and as far as adding more, that pretty much means replacing the one you have for a larger one. If you are buying a larger one, I would not just settle for a 425W because you may want to upgrade again later. Go with at least a 500W or a 600W. Prices aren't that much different.
There is no way to add to the existing power supply (safely). Just make sure to buy atleast a 500W supply for future upgrades. If you pay the extra money and get a power save certified PSU it will pay itself off in a couple of months of use.
Don't say where you are but visit www.cclonline.com and they can provide a wide range of power suppliers from 14.08 for a 500 watt supply.
i dont think there is an external power source but it is not hard to install one just make sure you are grounded

Why would I use inexpensive computer parts on an inexpensive computer?
YES.
my computer is cheap as hell but just had it updated with expensive parts giving it some value. depends rele hw u see it, cheap on cheap or expensive on cheap.
because you like risk, and with cheap no name parts, there lies a nominal amount of risk.
I would get good parts and just go bungee jumping
Just because it is inexpensive does not mean it is not good.
Because it is inexpensive.
To save $$..

Audio problem with new pc. using realtek and a pair of headphones?
I just built a new pc. my motherboard came with realtek audio drivers. it works okay with windows xp, but with games it does not play all the sounds and does not play at all with videos and music. i use a headset. please help.
hello...You may want uninstall all your realtek drivers. Burning your motherboard driver cd onto your hard drive..Then reinstall those drivers from your hard drive.it works for me ...Also decrease your sound acceleration. copy and paste DXDiag into run on your start menu ..Go to the sound tab and slide it back to basic. You won't notice any difference and it will probably be the answer if reinstalling the drivers doesn' work. try this first as it is easiest...hope it works out

Online coupon printing?
Hi,
I have no difficulty printing online coupons with bar codes. When I try to print store coupons without a bar code they are faded when they print and are not usable. Can anyone tell me if there is a specific toolbar to down load; or is there something else that I should be doing?
Thanks
It may have something to do with the specific store coupons you are trying to print, or it may be your printer. If you print plain-text documents and the text looks faded, then your printer may be low on ink/toner, have a clogged print head (if inkjet), or may just have some setting messed up somewhere. To fix these issues (assuming inkjet), get new ink, then try a new print head (that's the thing that you put the ink cartridges into). You might also try contacting the printer manufacturer for help with resetting the printer to factory settings.
However, if the plain-text looks fine, it's probably just those specific coupons that come out faded. You might want to try copying them into Microsoft Word or into a graphic editing program, then adjusting the contrast and darkness before printing. Your printer may also have the ability to boost contrast & darkness (look for a "Preferences" or "Properties" button on the pop-up where you select the printer just before printing).
thats a printer issue

Why is Firefox continuously freezing?
Hello there.
I have Firefox and every few minutes, it freezes up on me with 'Page not Responding' or whatever.
This is ridiculous.
IE works fine but I don't like it.
I have two toolbars (Google and Yahoo!).
What can I do to make it stop freezing like this?
There's a few possibilities,
1. Virus
2. No AntiVirus
3. Slow Computer
4. Unsubscribed AntiVirus
Could be any of these. I would suggest,
1.running a disc defragmentor
2.disc cleanup
3.antivirus scan
4.restart your computer
5.remove any unwanted or not needed programs that might have harmed your computer
6.install an antivirus
I would think it's because your computer has a virus of some sort or to low on memory.. to fix this you need to keep running scans disc defragments and (disc cleanup (optional)) turn off the computer before you go to bed, go on trips, leave the house.. any of those to not only save power but to save your computer from getting any harmful viruses, trojans and more...
This happened to me. Go to the start menu entry for firefox and start it in safe-mode. If it works fine there then it is one of the extensions. You can then go through them and find which one it is.
If this doesn't work though you'll probably have to reinstall.
try reinstalling the program making sure you download whatever is the newest version. if that dosent work, try another web browser and see if it has the same problem, if it does, consult your internet provider hotline.
hope this helped

What web browser do you use?
Using Chrome at the moment and it's brilliant I think but I still have to use Firefox at times because Chrome doesn't load my webmail properly.
Chrome and IE will never be the dominant browser because IE is bundled with Windows and so people use that instead of downloading and installing another program.
currently Firfox is at the top the major reason is that it has minimum security threats. and it has lot of Addons which are very help full for us.
Well.. google doesn't own Firefox, the best browser ever.
I tried google chrome when it first came out, and it sucked.
Went back to using Safari and Firefox

I'm using a college computer using Windows XP that has 2 USB ports. However, when I plug in my USB drive, nothing shows up. There's absolutely nothing on the desktop except for Internet Explorer 6 and the Start Menu only has the Log Off and Shut Down options.
Can I somehow tweak something so I can open the USB flash in the PC?
Hold the start key (the little key at the bottom left of the keyboard, it has the windows logo on it) and then press e and let go. If it's not blocked then it will open (my computer). If it opens you will be able to see the C drive and the disk drive etc. Your flash drive will be labled (removable disk and then a letter possibly E or F it doesn't matter which just open it lol.) Good luck...
its not suppose to show up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go to my computer and go to usb drive autoplay or open. if that dosent work just get a new usb or try a different computer.

Why does my logitech wireless mouse lose connection constantly?
The mouse constantly loses connection very quickly (the loss of connection lasts about a second each time then it comes back). Sometimes it loses connection altogether and will not work until I connect it to another computer. My USB ports are fine, everything else works and other mouse gives no problem just the logitech mouse. (2.4 Ghz)
could be a bad or low powered battery. Also if you have your 2.4 Ghz router or cordless phone near by, it can also cause problems since they work on the same frequency.
make sure you have the mouse in range of the reciever
my wireless mouse at work messes up all the time if the reciever is to far away
also if anything electronic(like my phone) is in front of the reciever my mouse will lose connection
it pisses me off all the time cause i constanly use my mouse
im an AutoCAD detailer

Is turning the computer off for 24 h on April 1st a good way to avoid any mess related to Conficker C?
yes give you time to walk outside and get some execise and breathe fresh air and maybe talk to real ppl face to face?
Lol.
Just download and run Malwarebytes Anti Malware
www.malwarebytes.org
and btw, that wouldn't work. As soon as you turn it back on the worm will know it's after april 1st and execute anyway.
just dont download anything your not sure of and dont open email attachments
do not go on websites where u r not sure that this site is secure
u shud have good antivirus & antispyware

Question regarding computer viruses and worms...?
I've been reading up on the Conficker worm that's supposed to be hitting on April 1...can these things 'infect' your PC if it's turned off?
The only way a virus or trojan can get into your computer is when 'You Let It' by clicking on an unknown file or downloading illegal games and movies. They aren't free - you pay with your system info.
Have a good Virus detector and a Spyware detector on your system and stay away from 'free stuff' and 'porn' and you'll be safe.
Sarge
No.
..then go buy a Mac or install Ubuntu.

Myspace profile views?
when i view my own profile does that count as a profile view?
Nope, it just anyone else besides you is what counts.
Like every time anyone clicks on your photo of yours or anytime anyone enters your page.
Hope this helped.
--Paulette
no it doesnt!
you just get a profile view everytime someone other than you looks at your profile
No. If that were possible, everyone would just view their own page and get free views.
Nope, it only counts when other people do (:
I don't think so i might be wrong though.

If i install windows xp server pack 3 do i loose all my files?
The other answer is false, it installs all of the updates that have come out since service pack 2. You will not lose anything when you install service pack 3.
If you need assistance installing service pack 3 contact DrexTech at:

www.drextech.com
I have just installed server pack 3 and I still have all my files from last month so my answer will have to be no .
If you've been running Windows Update, you're already way past SP3. If not, you should have been - turn it on.
only install sp3 if you have xp home installed, it makes it the same as pro

How can I upload stuff faster on dial up?
I am trying to upload a video on youtube but my slow dial up connection takes to long and won't allow me to upload fully. And I do not have excess to hi-speed. So is there anything I can do to make my dial up a little faster?
Unfortunately dial-up has a max speed of 56kbs (kilobytes per second) which totally sucks and you can't improve this. I would look into other services like satellite internet, or 1X service (if it is offered in your area). While these alternatives are not as fast as true Hi-speed they are faster then dial-up.
You would change the compression or codec used to make the video. The video would become smaller and take less time to upload. Try searching the internet for small size video codecs.
No, there is no way. You need to get high-speed. Dial up gets close to no upload speed. Look into getting internet from your cellphone provider.
Move to a new house.

I need help with my computer, possible virus?
Hello,
When i search for items on the internet when i click on the links that come up I am automatically redirected to something called... www.xxfindmyworldxx.com
What does this mean? I have windows defender and norton 2009. They both run smoothly.
Can you please help? I am very new to computers so please explain clearly!
Thank you!
could just be a problem with your hosts file, but to be sure,
reboot computer and when its booting up keep on pressing down the f8 key so it boots into safe mode,
then go to www.superantispyware.com download and run full scan Remove infections found
www.malwarebytes.org download and run quick scan remove infections found
www.lavasoft.com download and run ad aware free run full scan remove infections,
problem solved, all of the above are free,
Windows defender is a piece of crap and norton 2009 is a scam Horrible resource hog that doesnt really find viruses,
good luck
I'm sorry, but I do not have an answer. I am however having the same exact problem. I cannot search the web at all without being redirected first to xxfindmyworldxx.com and then to what ever stupid site it desires to send me. Never, ever what I need or want.

PowerPoint 2003 help !!!!?
soo i have powerpoint 2003 and i need to change the background on only 1 slide but when i click the background that i want it changes all the slides and i want the slides different help me!!!!
Not sure where you are getting your background from, so hopefully one of these two thing will help you...
1) If you are selecting a Design Template in the Slide Design palette, when you hover your mouse over the design, you'll see an arrow pulldown on the right side of the thumbnail. Pull it down and choose Apply to Selected Slides.
2) If you are formatting your background (either right clicking and selecting Background or Format pulldown menu --> Background), once you've made your selection, hit Apply NOT Apply to All.
If you are doing something else, there is probaby a similar option. If you can't figure it out, I bet I can help you!

How to enter someones profile, who his profile
You can only see someone's profile under certain conditions:
1) They list you as a friend, OR
2) One of YOUR friends has them as a friend, and the person has set their profile to viewable by friends of friends, OR
3) You're in the same network and their privacy settings permit people in that network to view their profile.
You can also see limited parts of their profile if they were to send you a message.
If you are clicking on their profile and not being able to view it, then you don't fall into any of these categories. I guess you could join one of their networks if you wanted to try to see their profile, but some people adjust their settings to make this impossible.

Other options to vectors no photoshop?
so im making this logo
and i need to use like vectors and stuff
i don't know the whole concept of them
but i don't have photoshop or anything which sucks
but is there anything like vectors or something that can give me good quality
i'm good with figuring out stuff and piecing it together
but i dont know how to work this
hhhhelp
Photoshop would not be the program you would use for vectors anyway (although you can do vectors in Photoshop, the final image would be raster/pixel based like any other image in Photoshop because it's a raster/pixel based program.) The correct program is Adobe Illustrator. But you have a free, legal alternative, it's called Inkscape. It is to vectors what the Gimp is to raster/pixel editing (and thus the Gimp is the free legal alternative to Photoshop.)
You can download Inkscape for free from www.inkscape.org. You can also download the Gimp from www.gimp.org. Be prepared to spend time learning how to use these programs, they aren't simple, but there are lots of forums and user groups out there to help you.

If that doesn't work, then use yahoo music search, or aol, and dogpile mp3 search. Hope you find it (:

Write me a grease monkey script...?
For gamefly.com
When I am browsing through the games the catalog does not indicate which games are in your GameQ. This is very annoying. I either have to click over to my GameQ or try adding the game again. I want the catalog to make some indication that the game is already in my GameQ just by looking at it from the catalog. A grayed out button perhaps (still functional) or the addition of some text or something. this has to be for grease monkey so it needs to be in javascript. i do not think it's possible to use stylish, however i could be wrong. I assume you have to write a script to find out what's in the GameQ and then use the html tags or something as reference...
I'll give it a shot, IM me.

Can I transfer my sister
yes all you need is an external drive or memory card... just transfer all music to external memory, find your music folder , copy it and then transfer it back to your new laptop
